DIXON PUBLIC LIBRARY
CHILDREN’S INTERNET USE AGREEMENT

Parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding which library resources are appropriate for their own children. Parents or legal guardians should guide their children in use of the Internet and inform them about materials they should not use. While the Library affirms and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of parents and guardians to monitor and determine their children’s access to Library materials and resources, including those available through the Internet, the Library has taken certain measures designed to assist in the safe and effective use of these resources by all minors:

bullet The Library has developed a web page, www.dixonpubliclibrary.org, to assist library patrons in selecting current, authoritative websites.  This web page has links to children’s search engines and specific links to information of interest to children
bullet The Library has installed filtering software on the Children’s Internet workstations to block inappropriate content from access by minors. Parents should be aware that filtering software will only limit such material and will not eliminate all inappropriate content. Some information found on the Internet may be inaccurate, incomplete, dated, or offensive to some individuals.  The Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet.
bullet Library staff will assist children in accessing appropriate Internet resources as time allows.
bullet The Library will periodically offer instructional computer classes.
bullet The Library has many reference resources available to help children and adults use the computers.
bullet Internet computers will be visible to library staff at the circulation desk.

 CHILDREN’S COMPUTER USE GUIDELINES

1. Children must be in grades 1 through 8 to use the Children’s Internet Computers.

2. Children in grades 1-4 must be directly supervised by a parent or adult caregiver when using the Children’s Internet Computers.

3. Children in grades 5-8 may use the Internet Computers independently only if a parent or legal guardian has read the Dixon Public Library Internet Policy and has given written permission.

4. Computer use is allocated in 30 minute time slots and children may use the computers for a total of one hour per day. Computer time may be reserved in advance but reservations will be held for no longer than ten minutes.

5. Children who do not comply with the Dixon Public Library’s Internet Policy will have their computer privileges revoked. The first offense will result in a one-month suspension. A second offense will result in a one-year suspension.
