Patrons may requests items not owned by the Library through Interlibrary Loan. Please search our library catalog first to make sure we do not already own the item [ Library Catalog ]. Patrons may request books, audio books, music CDs, magazine articles, and activity kits for children. We borrow newspaper microfilm if it is available for loan within Illinois. Most microfilm is loaned for in-library use only. The library does not request new popular movies (they are usually checked out and not available and many libraries do not lend them).

Mass-market paperbacks: these will be filled if found, but many paperback collections are not catalogued. Library shelf life of paperbacks is relatively short. |
Interlibrary loan is not for rush items. There are no guarantees on delivery time or that the item you request is available for loan. Allow at least two weeks but many loans can take longer. If the item you are looking for is popular, or if you have recently heard the item discussed on television or radio, other people are probably interested in it too and the item may be checked out everywhere and not available for a while.
Loan periods and all other conditions of a loan are determined by the lending library, not by Dixon Public Library. Many lending libraries prefer not to renew interlibrary loan items. Renewals are only possible if the lending library agrees to renew the item.
You will be notified when your Interlibrary Loan materials arrive. Interlibrary Loan materials must be returned to the Dixon Public Library only.
It is very important that materials are returned by the due date in the same condition as they arrived. The overdue fine for interlibrary loans is $.50 per day. The libraries we borrow from may not allow us to order materials for other patrons if any materials are overdue.
Due to the time, cost and effort involved to do interlibrary loan, there will be a $.50 fine if an interlibrary loan item is not picked-up.
Patrons will be charged for lost or damaged interlibrary loan material. These charges are decided upon by the owning library. These charges often include the cost of the lost material plus a service charge (due to the added costs incurred by the lending library to replace and process the lost item).
The copyright law of the United States (U.S. Code, Title 17) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
Rule of Five
In a single year, requests can only be made for five single articles from any given periodical published within the past five years.
Interlibrary Loan requests may be made in person at the Circulation Desk. Just request an Interlibrary Loan form: white forms are for books, blue forms are for article requests. ILL requests may also be made by phone, through the library's website ( use Interlibrary Loan Request Form or Periodical Article Photocopy Request Form), or through OCLC FirstSearch Electronic ILL/WorldCat. Dixon Public Library patrons may access OCLC FirstSearch from within the library or from home. Dixon Public Library patrons may access this database at home by entering their library barcode number. Log in to the FirstSearch research portal, which includes WorldCat or the Illinois Catalog databases.
